Title: ATHILA8A, an ancient family of Athila-like retroviruses. |

Abstract: ATHILA8A_I is an internal portion of the nonautonomous ATHILA8A endogenous retrovirus. There are ~10 copies of ATHILA8A_I in the genome; they are ~91% identical to the consensus sequence. The consensus sequence was derived from 9 proviral copies. The internal portion is flanked by ~90% identical LTRs (ATHILA8ALTR). Given the divergence of the flanking LTRs, ATHILA8A is older than ATHILA1-7 retrotransposons. Second half of ATHILA8A_I (positions 2600-5635) is ~60% identical to the internal portions of ATHILA4, ATHILA4A and ATHILA4C, including part of the Athila-like ORF1. The first half of ATHILA8A_I encodes a protein, ATHILA8A1p, which is not similar to any retroviral proteins or proteins encoded by other ATHILA-like elements.
