Abstract:
This L1 element appears to have been highly successful in Monodelphis, with >185000 hits in the current assembly. L1-2_MD is 84% similar to L1-1_MD over 5kb of its sequence. However, several thousand copies average >96% similarity to this consensus. Copies of L1-1_MD with similarity to that consensus of >99.5% are also high in number. This suggests that L1-1_MD and L1-2_MD may have been simultaneously active in the Monodelphis genome. L1 was probably the autonomous element responsible for mobilization of the very frequent SINE element MAR1_MD. Copies are flanked by 16-17 bp target site duplications. This consensus was reconstructed from the June 2005 release of the 6.8X WGS sequence.
