SINE2-4_SP, a family of SINE2 retrotransposons in the sea urchin genome.

Abstract:
SINE2-4a_SP is a young subfamily of SINE2-4_SP (the consensus sequences are 90% identical to each other). The genome harbors several hundred copies of SINE2-4a_SP elements that are ~96% identical to the SINE2-4a_SP consensus sequence. The ~70-bp 5'-terminal portion of SINE2-4a_SP is distantly related to these in SINE2-2_SP and SINE2-3_SP. Interestingly, the 70-bp 5'-terminal portion, which includes the pol III promoter, is highly diverse in SINE2s present in the sea urchin genome. For instance, the overall 10% diversity between the SINE2-4_SP and SINE2-4a_SP consensus sequences is almost entirely contributed by the 70-bp 5' terminal portions.
