Abstract: hAT5-2_NV is a young family of hAT DNA transposons and it belongs to a novel group of hAT transposons, called hAT5, generating 5-bp target site duplications upon their insertions into chromosomal DNA. The hAT5 transposase is similar to the standard hAT transposase (they share conserved catalytic motifs and converge with each other after a few rounds of PSI-BLAST); identified hAT5 transposase sequences form a distinctive phylogenetic cluster and they are also present in different species, e.g. sea urchin. hAT5-2_NV is flanked by 13-bp TIRs (3 mismatches) and encodes a 781-aa transposase (3 exons). The transposase contains the C2H2 motif present in diverse hAT transposase sequences encoded by different hAT transposons.
