Abstract: hAT5-3_NV is a very young family of hAT DNA transposons and it belongs to a novel group of hAT transposons, called hAT5, generating 5-bp target site duplications upon their insertions into chromosomal DNA. The hAT5 transposase is similar to the standard hAT transposase (they share conserved catalytic motifs and converge with each other after a few rounds of PSI-BLAST); identified hAT5 transposase sequences form a distinctive phylogenetic cluster and they are also present in different species, e.g. sea urchin. hAT5-3_NV is flanked by 12-bp TIRs and encodes a 802-aa transposase. The N-terminal portion of the transposase contains the C2H2 zinc finger motif.
