Abstract:
piggyBac-1_SM is a young family of piggyBac transposons, characterized by 12-bp TIRs and TTAA target-site duplications. The consensus sequence was reconstructed based on multiple alignment of four copies (they are ~97% identical to the consensus). The genome contains several hundred copies of nonautonomous deletion derivates of piggyBac-1_SM. In addition, we report here other 14 families of the freshwater planarian (flatworm) piggyBac. Evolution of two of them, piggyBac-8_SM and piggyBac-15_SM, involved relatively recent events of horizontal transfer between a flatworm and insect (see comments on these transposons).
